Parking disc zone: Everything you need to know about parking with a parking disc
You’ve probably seen them before: the blue lines on the road or the signs with the large white ‘P’. These indicate that you are in a parking disc zone, where special parking rules apply. But how exactly do these parking disc zones work? Where can you park, and when do you need to use the parking disc? Let’s explain it clearly, so you don’t face any surprises.
What is a parking disc zone?
A parking disc zone is an area where you are only allowed to park if you use a parking disc. These zones are clearly marked with road signs featuring a blue background and a white ‘P’, often with an image of a parking disc. Additionally, there may be blue lines painted on the road in parking spaces to indicate that these rules apply.

Where are you allowed to park in a parking disc zone?
In a parking disc zone, you are only allowed to park your car in designated areas. These areas can be identified by signs with a white ‘P’ or by blue lines on the ground. Sometimes, there are parking spaces on the road that are also marked with a ‘P’. These markings indicate that you may park in that specific place, provided you follow the correct rules.
If you park your car alongside the blue line, you must use a parking disc to indicate how long you have been parked. This is mandatory for all motor vehicles with four or more wheels. If you forget to place your parking disc or set it incorrectly, you risk receiving a fine, so it’s important to do it correctly!
How to use the parking disc?
Using a parking disc is actually quite simple. When you park your car, you need to indicate on the disc what time you started parking. You do this by setting the hand of the disc to the next half or whole hour after your arrival time. For example, if you arrived at 13:10, you would set the disc to 13:30. Make sure that the disc is clearly visible behind the windscreen, so that inspectors can easily see how long you have been parked.
The maximum parking time in a parking disc zone is often indicated on the sign at the parking spot. This can vary from half an hour to several hours, depending on the location and the level of congestion. Once you reach the maximum time, you must move your car. It is not allowed to simply reset the disc without driving away.

Exceptions: Motorcycles and other vehicles
Although most motor vehicles are required to use a parking disc in a parking disc zone, this does not apply to two-wheeled motorcycles. Motorbikes are generally allowed to park without a parking disc, even along the blue line. This is because motorcycles often lack an enclosed cabin, making it difficult to place a parking disc in a visible position. However, for car drivers, there is no escape: you must use that disc.
Why is a parking disc zone useful?
Parking disc zones are primarily designed to ensure that there are sufficient parking spaces available for short-term parkers. This is particularly important in busy areas, such as city centres or shopping streets, where parking spaces can be scarce. Thanks to the time limit and the mandatory use of the parking disc, it is prevented that cars remain parked in the same spot all day, which facilitates a greater use of parking spaces.

Fines and Inspections
If you forget to display your parking disc, set it incorrectly, or stay longer than allowed, you risk receiving a fine. Parking attendants regularly check the parking disc zones to ensure that everyone adheres to the rules. An incorrectly set disc can end up costing you dearly. Fines vary, but it’s always a shame to lose money unnecessarily due to something as simple as setting your disc incorrectly.
Useful tips for parking in a disc parking zone
- Always check the sign at the parking space – It indicates how long you are allowed to park maximum.
- Set your parking disc to the correct time – Adjust the pointer to the next half or whole hour after your arrival time.
- Don’t forget to display the disc visibly behind your windscreen – This prevents unnecessary fines.
- Keep an eye on the time – Ensure you return to your car on time to avoid exceeding the maximum parking duration.
