Motorway and Autoweg
Before we delve into the difference between a motorway and a autoweg, we need to understand that both are considered special roads. But what does that actually mean?
This means that not everyone can just use these roads and that specific rules apply.
What is a autoweg?
You can recognize a autoweg by that square blue sign with a car logo on it, like this:
Also remember that a road with green markings (below), is also considered a autoweg.
Maximum speed on a autoweg
The maximum speed on a autoweg is 100 km/h. A handy mnemonic: the traffic sign shows two headlights, which correspond to the two zeros in 100. And with green markings you can think of a 100 euro note, both green.
Minimum speed on a autoweg
A autoweg is special; not everyone is allowed to use it. Only motor vehicles that can and may drive at least 50 km/h are allowed. In other words, the minimum speed is 50 km/h.
Autoweg facts
On a autoweg you can:
- Encounter at-grade intersections and roundabouts.
- Expect oncoming traffic.
- Usually have short merging lanes.
- Often lack an emergency lane.

What is a motorway?
You can recognize a motorway by the well-known traffic sign. Here you can easily see the letter ‘A’ for motorway.
Maximum speed on a motorway
The maximum speed on a motorway is 130 km/h. Unless otherwise indicated on the signs. Always check the traffic signs along the road.
Minimum speed on a motorway
Just like on a autoweg, not just anyone is allowed to use it. Only motor vehicles that can and may drive at least 60 km/h are allowed.
Motorway facts
Important points on a motorway are:
- No oncoming traffic.
- No intersections or roundabouts.
- Sometimes signs with time restrictions for speed.
- Often there is an emergency lane.
- Hectometre signs along the road with the letter ‘A’, which also indicate your maximum speed.
- Lorries and vehicles with a trailer longer than 7 metres are not allowed to use the leftmost lane if there are more than two lanes.
What’s prohibited on motorways and autoweg’s?
Now we move on to actions that are absolutely prohibited on both motorways and highways:
It is strictly forbidden to:
- Reverse on the motorway or autoweg.
- Turn around.
- Stand still with your car on the roadway.
- Use the motorway and autoweg on foot.
So, whether you are zooming along the autoweg with the idea of two headlights in the back of your mind or on the motorway with the ‘A’ in your sights, remember that these roads are special, each with their own rules and peculiarities.
